Floundering

Laura Bell

Laura Bell is a well brought-up, well-educated English girl. At 23, she was married, childless, suburban, unhappy and fat. She had, as is shown by this extraordinary, thought-provoking book, an independent and exploratory mind, but her respect for convention meant that she was dying by degrees.

She is now 26, unmarried, happy and slim, a dedicated swinger who has sex with many different men and women every week. She never lost her respect for convention, but she sifted through society’s values and threw out many she found inappropriate and hypocritical. She recognised that she was, in her own word, a ‘bonobosexual’ – a swinger born and bred.

Come and Go
is her fascinating account of this voyage of discovery. Although it takes us to orgies at swingers’ clubs and resorts, tells of meetings for sex with countless strangers and probes the rites and rules of the British and international swing-scene like no book ever published before, this is not a dirty book. You will find here no breathy accounts of sweaty encounters, but a thoughtful story, filled with subjects for debate, of a modern girl striving to fit into the modern world whilst being true to her own nature.

In the course of her tale, she questions our notions of modesty, jealousy, monogamy, possession and love itself, and embarks on a love story of her own, far removed from literary convention, but none the less romantic for that.
